Campaign Monitor Pro for WooCommerce rename will impact users

As part of the process of preparing Campaign Monitor Pro for WooCommerce for the official WooCommerce Marketplace, it turns out that I must rename the plugin and change its slug.

The plugin has now been renamed from Campaign Monitor Pro for WooCommerce to Campaign Monitor Pro, and the plugin slug has changed from campaign-monitor-pro-for-woocommerce to campaign-monitor-pro.

Unfortunately, this change means that if you update the plugin, it will be deactivated immediately and you’ll see an error message complaining about a missing plugin file.

This is because WordPress (rightfully) treats the renamed plugin as a completely new plugin rather than an update to the existing one.

Did I really have to do this?

Yes. WooCommerce is entitled to set the rules around how its brand is used and the requirements for being listed on its Marketplace, even when meeting those requirements means making engineering changes to both the plugin and this website. So this is not an unreasonable request.

What do you need to do?

Thankfully it’s not a big deal. The recommended method is:

1. Deactivate and delete the Campaign Monitor Pro for WooCommerce plugin.
2. Download the new Campaign Monitor Pro from the Downloads, page, then upload and activate it on your website.

That’s all! Your existing settings and license key will be retained, so you won’t need to configure the plugin again or make any other changes.
